| Karen - I rembember your
wonderful parents very well indeed. We lived on Mutzarara farm, about 12
km from them. In particular I remember fighting forest fires with your Dad
- these fires were deliberately started, and were really the beginning of
the terrorist war. This would have been about 1963. You and Jenny must
have been babies or toddlers at the time ??? I am permanently and deeply homesick for the Chimanimanis (which of course is how I found your web site). Am very sorry to hear that your Dad passed away - in my eyes he is still a young, ever-cheerful, and ultra energetic forester and good friend to all. Your Mum will remember us. My mum is now 81 and living in Queensland, still ful of zest, but of declining health. |

memories!!!. I also remember many of the people mentioned in your guest book (e-mailing Graeme Fisher). My folks lived and worked in Silverstreams and I went to Melsetter school in the late 50’s. What a fantastic childhood we had visiting farms with the young farmers club (Green’s I think) climbing Pork Pie on Sundays or going to Bridal vale falls just to mention a few. There were 6 of us in my class, Althea Kloppers, Colin Young, Butch Sutton, Leonie Ashworth and one other. I will look for some old photo's and send them to you sometime. Good luck and keep up the good work Best Regard Gavin |

remember stacks of the names in the guest book. I had the very good
fortune of being on Charleswood Estate for the first 7 years of my life.
There I had the beautiful Chimani's as a backdrop to a perfect childhood
of swimming in the Haroni, climbing ( a lot !!)and riding horses. My Dad,
Bert Fisher,(deceased), worked with people like John Ball to build the
first hut on the mountain in the 50's. I would love to hear from some old mates, particularly Colin Young, Gavin Mawdsley and anyone else from those years. |

The family names are Gifford and Prudence Brent/ Tom Brent settled on a farm called Eastleigh, although there were several other farms that were in the family. I saw a note last time I was in Harare that Prudence wrote in 1911, which stated that there were very few remaining families alive and remaining in the area at that time. Is there anyone else related to this trek in some way? If so, I'd love to hear from you. Regards, Billie-Jean Bertoli |

of work and thought into it. I played in the local rock band (when last did you hear about a rock band) the Silhouettes during the 60's and 70's, and played many a memorable gig at the Chimanimani Hotel. My uncle, Sid Brown and his wife Helen also worked at one of the sawmills in Melsetter, could it have been Sheba? All 3 of their girls went to UGHS, Ros, Marion and Judy Brown were my cousins. Were the Gardiner's from Melsetter, or closer to Chipinga? Michael was in my class, and he had a sister Susan I think. The memory clouds. |

memories of Scout hikes and Outward Bound course. Was back in Zim last
year with the family and stopped at Hot Springs on way to parents home in
Mutare from Matopos. Intended to swing by the mountains on the last day
but guess what it rained! In August so we just headed home. My Dad reckons
every time there is a drought they should send for us as on every visit we
have made it has poured. Admitedly we usually visited inthe rainy season
but hoped to break the record and see no rain in August. Remember also
that we used to travel to Chipinga with my Dad to play cricket, us kids
used roam around the cricket ground playing with the locals. At one match
there was the biggest Great Dane I have ever seen and some of the younger
kids tried to ride him. |

memories and recollections of other folk too !. I was stationed in Chipinga (hence the call sign)with BSAP from 1974 - 1976. Melsetter did not have it's own mortuary so the Melsetter lads had to travel to Chipinga to lodge their deceaseds. I remember Stu O., stationed at Melsetter, had a Sudden Death report to deal with but the only vehicle at the station was a VW Bush. My memory is of Stu tootling up Chipinga main street with the deceased sitting in the back seat like he was a passenger on a Sunday drive. Visited Melsetter many times on socials and always treasured the Chipinga - Melsetter link road. What tremendous natural beauty. |

| I have had an intense interest
in Rhodesia since the mid '70's. as a lifelong anticommunist and lover of
freedom and order, once I found out about your country I could not let go
of it. Up until the internet era all I could get about Rhodesia was what
ever I coudld gleem in Soldier of Fortune magazine and the pictures I saw
confirmed in me what I beleived about Rhodesia all along. Of course now w/
all this pictures I can see WHY you fought so hard for your country...the
layout and landscape is breathtaking! what a gorgeous land!! on top of
that I have seen pictures of Salisbury, Umtali, Bulawayo, Fort Vic ect.
and what the White people built there in less than 3 generations is
amazing. I feel nothing but admiration for Ian Douglas Smith M.P. for he
was the only politician of the 1970's who was not fooled by the threat of
Communism that was engulfing Africa at the time. I contrast him to Jimmy
Carter, Vorter, Carrington and they all suffer in comparison. I do not see
when or how, but I hope that Rhodesia can some day be reborn as a happy
land where both the whites and blacks can work together for their mutual
benefit. If one good thing comes out of the current reing of terror there,
is the hope that both black and white can work hand in glove to rid
Rhodesia of the tyrant mugabe. |

All my children were born in the Eastern Highlands and spent their childhood in the Nyhodi Valley, and have very fond and happy memories of the area and people whom we knew. Thank you for bringing so much to so many during these troubled times in Zimbabwe. Annabelle |

| Karen, Thanks for a nostalgic trip down memory lane. I was fortunate enough to have been sent to Melsetter School with my brother Dion, later joined by my sister, Charminon. I boarded there between 1969 and 1973. Jenny was a classmate through my five years there, and the others included Ansi(Badenhorst?), Debbie Doyle and Arthur Chapman. Keep up your priceless work, my faded memories have received a welcome burnish! Thanks. Sean King |

| Karen, What a fantastic site you have. I have spent the last two hours surfing every word. The pictures of the Outward Bound School brought a lump to my throat. I went to the school as a student and instructor in the middle 1960's when Bill Bailey was runnung it. Memories of Martins Falls, The Hut, Been Nevis, The Saddle, Dragons Tooth, and the Southern Lakes, Tessas Pool flooded back. I was also stationed at BSAP NYANYADZI for 3 years in the middle 1970's and recall a lot of the names mentioned throughout you site. I think I can call myself an honoury Melsetterite. Thinking of putting together some of those memories for you. Kind Regards Alan Brent |

| Karen - Thank you for inviting
me to view your loverly site. I was stationed at CASHEL with the BSAP.(1976 -79) In 1928, the Cashel Valley district, was known as 'Melsetter North'. The Police Station situated at the end of the Tar Road (Border Road to Mozambique via Freddie Heyns' Farm "GOOD HOPE". , and the junction of the Tandaai Road to Melsetter. At that time, the Member in Charge of Melsetter was Rusty Bye. The District Commissioner was Martin Rabie. I have many wonderful memories of this part of the Country. Cashel was settled by mainly the STEYN family, who were part of the MARTIN Trek. John Heyns (the later Freddie's Son) is currently the Chairman of the Cattle Producers Assoc here in Zimbabwe. He is doing a great job, under extremely tough conditions. I will e-mail you at a later date with more from the past. Once again - Loverly Site - I'm "MaJealosi". |

efforts, the mountains really are magnificent, and viewing them from
horseback on a leisurely ride on one of Tempe's ponies has to be the best
way to do it. My girls Karin (8) and Tessa (5) positively loved being on
the horses and can't wait to go back and do it again. Tempe and Doug are on email though I don't have their address, they would be a good bet for up to date information on what's happeing in the village. There is an arts fair coming up which sounds great. Will check back again soon. Jan. |

| My aunt and uncle, Cecil and
Mary Marshall used to live in Melsetter. We used to spend our vacations there. It was so pretty, such a pleasant change from Salisbury. I have not been there since late 1972. I have not been in Africa since 1978. Some day I will go back, but fear of shattering my dreams holds me back. The Sleeping Giant story tells me maybe I shouldn't worry about it. I loved MUKIWA and have bought it for several friends and relatives. |
